A farming town below Kinabalu with a weekly tamu, tea gardens and Dusun home cooking.
Ranau is the main town of the district that includes Kundasang. It is a working agricultural town with a lively weekly tamu, nearby tea plantations and the Poring hot springs, and its food reflects its Dusun farming community.
Ranau lies in a wide valley east of Kundasang. Where Kundasang caters to visitors, Ranau is where farmers come to trade, and its weekly tamu is one of the best places in the interior to see local produce, river fish and snacks.
Tea is grown in the hills nearby, and the Poring hot springs are a short drive away. Most restaurants serve simple Malay and Dusun food, and noodle shops are good places to stop on a mountain trip.
