An east-coast port and the gateway to Danum Valley, with seafood and simple Malay cooking.
Lahad Datu is a port town on Darvel Bay and the usual base for trips into the Danum Valley and Tabin rainforests. Food is practical and good value: seafood, Malay rice plates and Chinese coffee shops.
Most visitors pass through Lahad Datu on their way into the rainforest at Danum Valley or Tabin. The town faces Darvel Bay, so seafood is fresh and inexpensive, and Malay and Bajau cooking is common alongside Chinese coffee-shop food.
Stock up on snacks before heading into the forest: field centres serve set meals, and there are no restaurants inside the reserves.
