West Coast · highland town
Cool-climate highland town under Mount Kinabalu, known for vegetables, dairy and warming food.
Kundasang sits at around 1,500–1,900 metres on the slopes below Mount Kinabalu. The cool air supports vegetable farms and dairy cattle, and its food is hearty: hot soups, highland greens, fresh milk and roadside market snacks.
The drive from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang takes about two hours and climbs into a landscape of terraced vegetable farms, cool mist and, on clear mornings, the granite peaks of Mount Kinabalu.
Food here follows the weather. Hot noodle soups and steamboat are popular, highland vegetables like cabbage, carrots and leafy greens are sold along the main road, and dairy products from local farms turn up in cafes as fresh milk, yoghurt and ice cream.
Mornings are the best time to visit: the mountain is more likely to be clear and the vegetable stalls are fully stocked.
